Exchange is currently in recovery mode

by Michael W. Wass - April 18, 2007

If you are receiving the error: "Exchange is currently in recovery mode" when you start Microsoft Outlook then do the following:

Going through these steps will essentially remove the Outlook cache from your computer, and then rebuild it. The cache is the local copies of your emails. Don't worry, you wont lose anything.

Turn Off Cache Mode

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook

  2. Select the Tools Menu

  3. Select Email Accounts

  4. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts

  5. Click Next

  6. With "Microsoft Exchange Server" selected, click Change

  7. Un-check the box for "Use Cached Exchange Mode"

  8. Click Next

  9. In the box that pops up, click Ok

  10. Click Finish

Close Microsoft Outlook

Delete OST files from hard drive

  1. Click Start then Search

  2. Select Search for Files and Folders

  3. All files and folders

  4. Expand "More Advanced Options"

  5. Check the box next to "Search hidden files and folders"

  6. Leave the other options at default

  7. In the top box for "All or part of the filename", type in "*.ost"

  8. Look in should be "Local Hard Drives"

  9. Click Search

Search will find files such as "outlook.ost", "outlook001.ost" etc.

Select all the files found and select Delete This will delete all the offline emails from your computer, but they are still on the server so you wont lose anything

Turn On Cache Mode

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook

  2. Select the Tools Menu and then Email Accounts

  3. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts

  4. Click Next

  5. With "Microsoft Exchange Server" selected, click Change

  6. Check the box for "Use Cached Exchange Mode"

  7. Click Next

  8. In the box that pops up, click Ok

  9. Click Finish

Restart Microsoft Outlook

Once Microsoft Outlook is restarted, all of your emails will download to your computer again. It may take some time, depending on the number of emails you have. You can watch the progress in the lower right hand corner of your Microsoft Outlook screen, it will show all the folders while they update.
