Remove the Acrobat Toolbar from Microsoft Outlook

by Michael W. Wass - November 3, 2009

If you're like the rest of us and it drives you nuts when you open your Microsoft Outlook or any other application and a 3rd party add-in toolbar (which you were never asked if you wanted or not) appears atop your screen taking precedence over all the others. It's almost as bad as the pesky icons that appear in your taskbar tray that rob your computer of precious memory just so they can load a program faster you never ever use but once in a blue moon, if ever.

Here's how to remove them for good or just disable them from loading until you actually want to use them.

Note: Acrobat's toolbar is only installed by Adobe Acrobat if you actually purchased it. The free reader does not install this toolbar.

To remove it from your computer completely, select Add/Remove Programs from Control Panel and find the entry for Adobe Acrobat. Select Change, then the option to Modify the installation.

Expand "Create Adobe PDF" and click the Microsoft Outlook item then select "This feature will not be available". If you want to be able to remove creation of PDF's from all the programs listed, click on "Create Adobe PDF" and select "This program will not be available" to apply the option to each item underneath it.

Click Next and Finish the Add/Remove Wizard.

You may need to provide your Adobe installation disk to un-install.

This change will not affect being able to print to PDF it just simply removes the toolbars from the programs you've selected.

If you'd like to disable it completely you will have to modify your systems registry.

To prevent the PDFMaker COM Addin from loading open regedit and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\PDFOutlook.PDFMOutlook and change the LoadBehaviour value from 3 to 2. Restart Outllook and the toolbar is gone!

When you use this method, the PDF functions will still be available.

Note: Installing Adobe Acrobat updates may reset the registry key and you can use the same method for other software programs too.

To simply hide the toolbar button, create the OutlVisible value:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat\PDFMaker\7.0\Outlook\EmailToPDF

Value Name: OutlVisible

Value: 0
